Liver Cancer: Can sugar and obesity cause liver cancer?

Liver Cancer: A research has revealed that sugar and obesity can cause liver cancer to re-emerge. Liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Apart from this, it has also come to light that in 40 years the number of adults suffering from obesity will increase six times while the number of people suffering from diabetes will increase to 642 million.

Liver Cancer: Osaka Metropolitan University conducted research on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It is a type of liver cancer associated with hepatitis infection. It can lead to recurrence of liver cancer and is also the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. Obesity and sugar are associated with metabolic syndrome. Which promotes fat accumulation disease (steatotic liver disease), which can lead to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).However, it is not clear whether obesity or sugar affect the survival of the patient or the recurrence of cancer. The research team of Dr. Hiroji Shinkawa of the University’s Graduate School of Medicine said, in hepatocellular carcinoma, the risk of recurrence is higher, albeit delayed, with obesity and sugar. Controlling obesity and sugar is necessary for prevention.

In a research published in the journal Liver Cancer, the team analyzed 1,644 patients of hepatocellular carcinoma who had undergone liver resection surgery. Based on the research, an attempt was made to find out what is the relationship between sugar mellitus, obesity and postoperative outcomes. The report revealed that the risk of recurrence of obesity increased by about 1.5 times two years after the operation and this risk was 1.3 times higher in the case of sugar.

According to the results, patients suffering from obesity had a 3.8 times higher risk of recurrence of cancer five years after the operation, while it was 2 times higher with sugar. Shinkawa said that the findings could help in early detection of cancer recurrence and move towards proper treatment.

Obesity often leads to type 2 diabetes. These two conditions are often interlinked. A recent study has shown that the number of adults suffering from obesity will increase six-fold in the next 40 years, while the number of people suffering from diabetes will reach 642 million by 2040.
